KOLKATA: An 18-year-old student of GD Birla School who appeared for ICSE board exams this year allegedly drowned at a local lake located next to Sarsuna College inside the Shakuntala Park township on Saturday afternoon. Behala's Talpukur Road resident, Ankit Dey (18), was taken to Vidyasagar Hospital where he was declared dead.Witness Debasish Das said, Dey went to bathe in the lake around 2.30pm with his friends. Apparently, neither Dey nor his friends knew how to swim . Dey along with his classmate Rahul Bhagat and a third friend went to Lake number one where some other youths were also swimming. It was not clear if they were all from the same group, said Das."The boys took turns to dive into the water, Dey being the last one. While the two others walked back towards the ghat, Dey was missing. His friends frantically looked for Dey but could not locate him. So, Bhagat rushed to the Sarsuna police station located 500 metres away to inform the cops," said Das.Then locals and the OC looked for Dey for around 20 minutes. "We found the boy stuck in the weeds below the water. He was dead by the time we could get him out," said a police officer.According to locals, the lake located inside the township is deep at the edges making it risky for those who cannot swim. A couple of deaths have been reported from the same lake earlier as well. "Even during immersions, there are trained swimmers deployed by DMG and Kolkata police. Dey's death could have been averted if someone had warned the youths about the lake," said a local resident.
