KOLKATA: The nor'wester that the city had been waiting for finally lashed it on Saturday evening. The 76km/hr storm pulled the mercury down considerably but uprooted several trees across the city. The driver of a private car, identified as Jadav Mandal , 45, died after a tree fell on the i10 near airport gate no. 2 around 8.45pm. Three other passengers in the car were grievously injured and taken to a nursing home near Chinar Park.While south Kolkata got the lion's share of evening rain, the storm and the showers were relatively mild in central and north Kolkata. Traffic movement was disrupted after uprooted trees blocked several roads, including Harish Mukherjee Road, Red Road and Lenin Sarani.Six flights were diverted and several departures were delayed at the airport. Services were normal in suburban railway, barring minor disruption on the Baruipur-Laxmikantapur line."The conditions were ripe for a storm. It turned out to be quite a good one," said G K Das, director, Regional Meteorological Centre. The Met office has predicted another nor'wester on Sunday.
