more-in Protests erupted in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly on Tuesday when Left Front and Congress legislatures raised the issue of police assault on Left Front supporters during the “March to Nabanna” on Monday. Left Front MLA Tanmoy Bhattacharya demanded that an adjournment motion be allowed in the House. Adjournment motion After the adjournment motion was disallowed by the Speaker, Left Front MLAs raised posters, held black flags and shouted anti-government slogans in the House. The Left Front MLAs, along with Congress lawmakers, descended to the well of the House shouting slogans against the government. The MLAs later held protests in the Assembly premises under the statue of B. R. Ambedkar. The Left and Congress MLAs then marched towards the Raj Bhavan meet to Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi. The Speaker adjourned the House for some time after protests by Left and Congress MLAs. However, the Left Front and Congress MLAs didn’t join in once the House resumed. A condemnation motion against the Opposition MLAs was passed. Speaker Biman Banerjee observed that certain MLAs weren’t abiding by the rules of the House and that no posters will be allowed in the House from Wednesday. Along with Leader of the Left Front Legislature Party Sujan Chakraborty, Leader of Opposition Abdul Mannan condemned police action against Left Front supporters. “I condemn the way the CPI(M) workers were attacked on Monday. This is undemocratic. Nobody was carrying arms or bombs that the police attacked them,” Mr. Mannan said. “Police action on Left Front supporters and journalists just shows how brutal the police can be. This is an attack on democracy. We have to come meet the Governor to inform him about the development so that he can take action,” Mr. Chakraborty said. Social media Later in the day, the Left Front leadership took out a rally in Kolkata protesting against the assault on Left Front members. In a related development, 12 Left Front supporters arrested by the Kolkata Police were produced before a city court and booked under non-bailable charges were granted bail. The Kolkata Police took to social media saying that “all guilty persons” in the “March to Nabanna” will be arrested.
