The name Mintu Chowdhury is no alien for those residing across the North Bengal. To many he is like a savior since 1968, he has been relentlessly working towards protecting and saving snakes.

A resident of Dhupguri in Jalpaiguri district, Mintu is not a trained herpetologist. The belt experiences snake menace at large during the rainy season. About two decades ago Mintu had been to the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan where he had healed three pythons which belonged to the then Bhutan king, Jigme Kesar Wangchuk.

The overwhelmed royal family had offered Mintu a royal invitation to stay and work on snakes in Bhutan. But Mintu had other dreams of doing something in India, one of which is to build a snake park in Dhupguri. Mintu Chowdhury has been bitten thrice by cobras, but that hasn’t stop him from handling the reptiles.
