Officials of NIT-C reveal that the mushrooming numbers of make-shift shops along the campus has a very suspicious role in beckoning students to substance abuse. A non-teaching staffer from the campus says that the finger of suspicion is also pointed at the illegally parked vehicles, including covered ones, along the roads near the NIT-C campus. There are numerous professional institutions in and around Kunnamangalam, and it is the vigil of the police that often exposes illegal activities on the campus, they say. The possibility of attracting students to costly psychedelic drugs too should be checked, they say. NIT-C sources say the two recent incidents in which the police have seized around seven kilograms of ganja from the campus along with secretly stocked Indian-made foreign liquor call for better vigil in the area.

more-in The frequent seizure of ganja and liquor has put the premises of the National Institute of Technology - Calicut (NIT-C) under a cloud of suspicion over the active presence of an invisible drug distributors’ chain that cashes in on students’ curiosity to try psycho-addictive substances for merriments. NIT-C sources say the two recent incidents in which the police have seized around seven kilograms of ganja from the campus along with secretly stocked Indian-made foreign liquor call for better vigil in the area. The possibility of attracting students to costly psychedelic drugs too should be checked, they say. Officials of NIT-C reveal that the mushrooming numbers of make-shift shops along the campus has a very suspicious role in beckoning students to substance abuse. The licences of most such shops are under suspicion as the operators are mostly non-Kerala workers, and they do odd business in those shops, he adds. More than 15 such shops are now functional on the premises of the NIT-C, where local bodies or enforcement authorities are yet to check their unlawful operation and the materials they store for distribution. Sources say that some make-shift shops never function regularly, but buyers enjoy the freedom of taking things from such outlets during suspicious hours even in the absence of caretakers. A non-teaching staffer from the campus says that the finger of suspicion is also pointed at the illegally parked vehicles, including covered ones, along the roads near the NIT-C campus. No one is sure about the ownership of such strange vehicles, the goods kept inside them and the purpose of leaving them along the road for long time in a suspicious manner, he adds. Meanwhile, the police say that the frequency of surprise patrolling has been increased in the area in the wake of the recent seizure of ganja and IMFL supplied by unidentified gangs to students on the campus. There are numerous professional institutions in and around Kunnamangalam, and it is the vigil of the police that often exposes illegal activities on the campus, they say.
