The delay in the issue of the Unique Disability ID (UDID) is also adding to the woes of the differently abled. SRDA chairman Shahul Hameed Madavoor said the differently abled in the State were not being paid financial aid under projects such as Ashwasakiranam and Swavlamban health insurance. Cause for concernThe Swavlamban health insurance scheme is another cause for concern for the differently abled. The Society for Rehabilitation of the Differently Abled (SRDA), an organisation of differently-abled persons, their parents and rehabilitation workers, is planning to launch a Statewide campaign to press the government to provide them benefits they are eligible for. more-in The Society for Rehabilitation of the Differently Abled (SRDA), an organisation of differently-abled persons, their parents and rehabilitation workers, is planning to launch a Statewide campaign to press the government to provide them benefits they are eligible for. SRDA chairman Shahul Hameed Madavoor said the differently abled in the State were not being paid financial aid under projects such as Ashwasakiranam and Swavlamban health insurance. Ashwasakiranam is a State-funded project to aid helpers of the mentally ill with a nominal amount every month. “Most of them have not got the aid for months. The Social Justice Department insists on submitting life certificate of the beneficiaries every six months. But incidentally, even people who have submitted it have not received the aid,” said Mr. Hameed. Cause for concern The Swavlamban health insurance scheme is another cause for concern for the differently abled. The scheme launched by the Central government in association with the New India Assurance company, has failed to take off. The State government came forward to pay 10% of the premium that should have been paid by the beneficiaries from BPL class themselves. Those from APL families paid the premium directly to the insurance company. Now, neither has received the policy or the premium amount they paid. The local bodies in the State had also let down the differently-abled students by not providing monthly scholarship, said Mr. Hameed. The amount is shared by the grama panchayats and district panchayats. However, since the grama panchayats have mostly failed to set aside their share, the district panchayats too have pulled out. The delay in the issue of the Unique Disability ID (UDID) is also adding to the woes of the differently abled.
