Cyberdome for northern districts soon

The Cyberdome initiative, which was first launched in Thiruvananthapuram to meet the long-term security challenges in cyberspace with public-private partnership and confidential information sharing, will initially partner with six prominent IT companies in the Malabar region. It will work on the possibility of designing a special purpose mobile application and software to assist the police in cybercrime investigations. Good response Backing the initiative, 30 persons from various northern Kerala districts have responded to an online call of the police to register their names as Cyberdome volunteers and utilise their technical skills and professional expertise free of cost. The police have identified 24 areas of specialisation, and the volunteers can select any field to support the project. Only those screened and approved by the police will be chosen as volunteers. Internet monitoring, virtual policing, automated threat intelligence, tracking system for child protection, fingerprint capture application, cyber forensics, image analysis software, online network investigation application, victim identification, and criminal apprehension software are some of the listed areas of specific interest through which the volunteers can extend their support to the police and the Cyberdome. Along with the expertise of the volunteers, the Cyberdome will have the patronage of institutions like the Indian Institute of Management - Kozhikode and the National Institute of Technology - Calicut. The registration of volunteers is in progress through the official portal of the Kozhikode City Police. A link has been created on the portal to enter the personal details of applicants and intimate the police of their preferred area. The verification of applications will be done in such a way that the department can exclude candidates with poor reputation or criminal background. The State government will invest ?1 crore for developing the Cyberdome in Kozhikode, and a 500-sq ft area at Cyberpark will be initially used for setting up the office, a senior officer attached to the Cyberdome project told The Hindu. He said the full-fledged functioning of the office would begin in a week. Though the Cyberdome will utilise the expertise of seasoned professionals, it will be directly controlled by trained police officers in Information Technology. The Cyberdome will work in collaboration with similar units in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. Technical collaboration Also, it will have technical collaboration with nationally and internationally acclaimed cyber- and law enforcement agencies. Other than confining the activities to a particular office space, officials said the Cyberdome would explore the possibility of virtual collaboration with the volunteers to excel in the area.
