GIS-based land info system getting ready

  • | Monday | 21st May, 2018

The Kerala State Land Use Board (KSLUB) will soon complete its GIS (geographic information system)-based Land Resources Information System (LRIS) in Kerala, which will help local bodies and government departments easily access the data on land resources in their respective areas and plan land use accordingly. The project was delayed in Pathanamthitta and Malappuram districts as a result of technical hurdles faced in completing the survey and collecting land resources information. A priority list had been prepared by the department for implementation, in which Pathanamthitta and Malappuram districts figured in the last phase. The LRIS is also loaded with information on 16 diverse subjects on land resources and around 85 sub themes covering micro-level details. Data from the remaining two districts — Pathanamthitta and Malappuram — will be uploaded within a month, marking the completion of the ?2.5 crore project.

more-in The Kerala State Land Use Board (KSLUB) will soon complete its GIS (geographic information system)-based Land Resources Information System (LRIS) in Kerala, which will help local bodies and government departments easily access the data on land resources in their respective areas and plan land use accordingly. Already, the geospatial data from 12 districts has been uploaded to the portal. Data from the remaining two districts — Pathanamthitta and Malappuram — will be uploaded within a month, marking the completion of the ?2.5 crore project. KSLUB Commissioner A. Nizamuddin says the LRIS initiative has come to the aid of the State government’s ‘Haritha Keralam’ project in planning various activities on the basis of accurate land information provided on the LRIS portal. It also helped in the planning of various projects under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, he adds. “The geospatial data collection in Pathanamthitta and Malappuram districts has already been completed and we hope to complete the uploading process within a month,” says Mr. Nizamuddin. He adds that a State-level announcement of the completion of the undertaking will be made in Malappuram. The LRIS facility now offers complete geospatial details of 12 districts in Kerala on its portal with accurate information on road network, land water resources with georeferenced cadastral database. The LRIS is also loaded with information on 16 diverse subjects on land resources and around 85 sub themes covering micro-level details. The local bodies can have a look at even the unused revenue land and protect it from encroachment attempts. Officials say this digital repository of information hosted using the open source software is open to the public for research and reference purposes. On completion of the project in all the 14 districts, the researchers can use LRIS to get Kerala’s land records online and get a printout for future references, they add. The LRIS portal, which was designed in a user-friendly manner with the support of technicians from the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management - Kerala, also provides a graphical representation of the total assets of local bodies and a summary on the existing land usage to have an easy assessment. Details of all city corporations, municipalities and grama panchayats will also be available on the portal on completion of updates. The project was delayed in Pathanamthitta and Malappuram districts as a result of technical hurdles faced in completing the survey and collecting land resources information. A priority list had been prepared by the department for implementation, in which Pathanamthitta and Malappuram districts figured in the last phase.
