National Sample Survey from July

Besides National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) personnel, representatives of the Department of Economics and Statistics (DES) from the seven northern districts also will attend the training. The 76th round of National Sample Survey (NSS) for exclusive collection of data on economic and operational characteristics of persons with disabilities, drinking water, sanitation, hygiene and housing conditions will commence next month. The results of the survey will also meet the data requirement of National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog, Housing and Urban Development Corporation, Water Aid India, UNICEF and WHO . The statistical indicators derived on the basis of the survey are required for planning and policy making for persons with disabilities. The DES is participating in NSS by conducting the survey in an equal number of households as covered by NSSO.

The survey will continue for six months. During the period, specially trained statistical officers of field operations division of the NSS office will visit selected households and collect details on two subjects - ‘Drinking water, Sanitation, Hygiene and Housing Condition’ and ‘Persons with Disabilities’. The training of personnel to conduct the survey in the northern districts of Kerala will begin at Woodies Hotel in Kozhikode on June 18. Besides National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) personnel, representatives of the Department of Economics and Statistics (DES) from the seven northern districts also will attend the training. The DES is participating in NSS by conducting the survey in an equal number of households as covered by NSSO. The training will conclude with a field trial on June 20. The Union government has been conducting the survey since 1950 to collect socio-economic data employing scientific sampling methods. NSS, conducted in the form of rounds, is one of the largest sample surveys in the world. The main users of the data are the ministries of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Housing and Urban Affairs, Health and Family Welfare, and The Office of the Registrar. The results of the survey will also meet the data requirement of National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog, Housing and Urban Development Corporation, Water Aid India, UNICEF and WHO . Apart from these users, the results of the survey will be useful for other planners, policy makers and researchers. The statistical indicators derived on the basis of the survey are required for planning and policy making for persons with disabilities. Facilities of housing, drinking water and sanitation, along with the micro environment surrounding houses are important determinants of the overall quality of life of the people of the country.
