Mayor Thottathil Raveendran flags off the new vehicles of the corporation in the city on Monday. more-in The Kozhikode Municipal Corporation launched five tipper lorries and a water tanker on Monday. Scarcity of vehicles to carry waste has been a long-standing problem for the Corporation Health Wing. The problem escalated when some vehicles were on repair or undergoing fitness tests. Now the 18 health circles and three zonal offices of the corporation have 38 vehicles to carry waste. The lorries are now used to carry biodegrdable waste to the corporation’s treatment plant at Njeliyanparamba. However, with the new waste management policy of the corporation, that stresses on source-level management of biodegrdable waste, comes to effect, the purpose of the lorries will be to transport plastic waste from various Mini Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) to the Super MRF, said Health standing committee chairman K.V. Baburaj. Mayor Thottathil Raveendran flagged off the new vehicles. The new water tanker, with a capacity of 8,000 litres, will be used to supply drinking water to the 200 families in Njeliyanparamba affected by the waste dumping yard nearby.
