more-in Nellikode Pappan, well-known theatre actor of yesteryear, passed away here on Sunday. The 90-year-old actor had been undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College, Kozhikode. Pappan stepped into theatre through ‘porattu natakam,’ folk plays featuring humorous dialogues, and dance and drama, performed on paddy fields after the harvest. Later, he joined Yuvajanasangham and Kalasamiti, theatre troupes led by actor Nellikode Bhaskaran. The late thespian P.J. Antony had rechristened Mandambattu Puthanpurakkal Padmanabhan as Nellikode Pappan. He accompanied actors such as Balan K. Nair, Kunhandi, Vasu Pradeep, Kuthiravattom Pappu and Mamukkoya to perform theatre across the State. Some of his memorable performances were plays including Bank of chittikkals, Thallaruthammava njan nannavilla, and Kshamikkanam gurukkale. He also acted in around 20 feature films and television serials. Pappan has been keeping away from theatre for the past 10 years because of age-related ailments. He is survived by his wife Suseela, a theatre actor. His son predeceased him.
