The by-law was prepared by corporation veterinary officer Sreeshma in accordance with the provisions of the Municipal Act. Accordingly, dog owners will have to pay a fee of ?500 for licensing of their pets, while the fee for dog breeders is ?1,000. Those applying for licence will have to submit a vaccination card certified by a veterinary surgeon to prove that the dogs have been administered rabies vaccine. The by-law also suggests micro-chipping of dogs. Owners will have to submit a consent letter for micro-chipping of dogs while applying for licence. “This is to prevent abandoning of pet dogs once they grow old. With the help of micro chips, we will be able to trace the true owner of each dog,” Dr. Sreeshma said. The micro-chipping process will be carried out at the new veterinary super-specialty hospital of the corporation at Poolakkadavu. The by-law, which was approved by the corporation council, will be posted on the corporation website for a month for the public to make suggestions. The revised by-law will be implemented later. However, the veterinary hospital at Poolakkadavu is yet to start functioning, as the dog van for the Animal Birth Control centre is yet to be sanctioned. “Renting out a vehicle is not economical. Hence the delay,” Dr. Sreeshma added.
