more-in With the Kerala State Aids Control Society (KSACS) trying to bring some of the sex workers in the district into the Kudumbasree fold, two exclusive Kudumbasree neighbourhood groups for sex workers were formed in the district recently. Ten former sex workers have come forward to join the Kudumbasree fold as a means of seeking out alternative employment opportunities. Kudumbasree will give them training in various vocations to help them set up their own enterprises. Though the two groups have expressed interest in the catering business, the Kudumbasree District Mission plans to provide them orientation on other possible vocations as well. “The increasing demand for cloth bags is an opportunity they could make use of. A tailoring unit may also work out,” said Kudumbasree District Mission Coordinator Kavitha P.C. Training The training for the two groups will start along with general skill training sessions of Kudumbasree after the Onam rush ends. “There are many more people out there who will benefit from such an initiative. Once the first two groups take off, we plan to concentrate on them,” said Kudumbasree gender resource person Rajitha, who has also been instrumental in setting up the transgender neighbourhood groups in the district. The first transgender group has been successful in the catering business while the second one, recently formed, is taking baby steps into the field of agriculture.
