Youth clubs, volunteers offer aid at relief camps

He will also hold talks with local panchayat officials and visit relief camps at AKTM LP School at Manalvayal in Puthuppady panchayat. Ramakrishnan, who visited the relief camps at Kannappankundu on Sunday, said people’s participation in relief work was a stupendous model for all, and that it helped the affected families surmount the crisis. Around 600 persons are now staying in camps. Youth clubs affiliated to Nehru Yuva Kendra and various other voluntary organisations have already got in touch with potential sponsors to mobilise aid for the needy. Special care is also being offered to senior citizens, those under medication, and children. The clubs are getting generous support from businessmen and non-governmental organisations. V.N. Shimjith, coordinator of a youth club, said: “What we do is find generous persons in our own areas and connect them with the needy. Coordination between various local clubs and forums too has been successful.” Noticing the zeal of youth organisations and voluntary bodies, various residents’ organisations, professionals’ groups, and educational institutions are now planning to donate the money set apart for Onam celebrations. The Puthuppady Service Cooperative Bank even released welfare pension to eligible persons even before funds were officially released by the government. The bank authorities said they would set apart ?1.71 crore towards pension covering 3,871 villagers. Minister visits camps Meanwhile, Minister for Excise and Labour T.P. Ramakrishnan, who visited the relief camps at Kannappankundu on Sunday, said people’s participation in relief work was a stupendous model for all, and that it helped the affected families surmount the crisis. The striking fact was that they all considered it a calamity, he observed. The Minister, who also visited all the affected areas in Puthuppady panchayat on Sunday morning, said that families accommodated in relief camps were happy with the available facilities. “When they return home, we will give them all possible support to clean and repair their houses,” Mr. Ramakrishnan added. On Monday, Revenue Minister E. Chandrasekharan will visit Kannappankundu and Mattippara and take stock of the loss and rehabilitation requirements. He will also hold talks with local panchayat officials and visit relief camps at AKTM LP School at Manalvayal in Puthuppady panchayat.
