Students of Government Mappila Lower Primary School, Naduvannur, are among those who collected notebooks, school bags and pencils, worth ?30,000. Saleem N.K., president of the parent-teacher association, told The Hindu on Monday that students from even lower kindergarten section participated in the drive. They walked around the local market at Keekkottukavu and spoke to people and members of voluntary organisations, who chipped in with help. Some of the study materials were handed over to 11 children now put up at a relief camp at Mannankavu Lower Primary School. The rest were handed over to the authorities at the collection point set up at the District Tourism Promotion Council ground in Kozhikode on Monday. This school was among those proposed to be closed down by the Education Department citing lack of student strength, in 2008. However, the situation changed gradually with the active involvement of the local population, teachers and others and the student strength increased from eight to 150 in a decade. This year, it was among the schools that reported the highest number of admissions. More donations Students of Aided Upper Primary School, Velliyoor, near Perambra, also collected funds and study materials from the local residents. Noushad T.K., a teacher there, said a group of 22 students managed to collect materials worth around ?28,000 after they conducted a drive in Nochadu grama panchayat limits and in Perambra town on Sunday. The campaign was titled ‘Bhayappedenda, koodeyundu’. The students are planning to conduct one more round of visit on Tuesday. Mr. Noushad said the collected material would be handed over to District Collector U.V. Jose on Wednesday. The students of Government Higher Secondary School, Poonoor, too handed over a demand draft to the authorities at DTPC ground.
