more-in The Health Department has issued an alert against outbreak of contagious diseases in the post-floods scenario. District Medical Officer V. Jayasree urged doctors in government and private hospitals and small clinics to inform the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme office and the local primary health centres if they come across any cases of communicable diseases. The Department and the National Health Mission are holding medical camps at many places and special camps were held at Malapparamba and Olavanna. The Department has also issued an advisory against the outbreak of leptospirosis. Those who were employed in cleaning of flood-hit areas have been asked to exercise caution. They should use protective gears such as gloves and gumboots. Self-medication should be strictly avoided if symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle pain, redness in eyes, and nausea are noticed. Consumption of doxycycline tablets once a day for six weeks is advised a day before starting the cleaning works. Meanwhile, a 24-hour control room has been opened at the district medical office to collect data and coordinate activities against the outbreak of contagious diseases.
