District Medical Officer V. Jayasree gave the name of the deceased as Salimsha, 42, of Karammoola near Karassery, and Vijesh, 34, of Keezhal near Vadakara. The isolation ward set up during Nipah outbreak at the medical college will now accommodate leptospirosis patients. As many as 17 persons have died with leptospirosis symptoms in the district so far, and the blood samples of six of them had been tested positive. As many as 142 persons were undergoing treatment for fever at the medical college now, of whom 38 have leptospirosis. Two more persons succumbed to leptospirosis and two others, including the brother of a councillor in the Kozhikode Corporation, were suspected to have died of the infection in the district on Sunday.
