Hartal supporters owing allegiance to the United Democratic Front and Left Democratic Front forcibly closed several shops at Mukkom in Kozhikode district, where a section of traders tried to defy the hartal call. However, vehicles hired for wedding events and the delivery of relief materials were spared with the intervention of local leaders. The irate activists also locked horns with the policemen, and threatened the merchants who tried to attend to their customers unmindful of the protest. A number of private vehicles including motorbikes and cars were blocked on the road on Monday morning as police presence was minimal along several stretches.
