On Friday, Congress workers staged a demonstration in front of the Kakkodi village office, protesting against the exclusion of flood-hit families from the beneficiary list. “The original list contained 1,200 names. But only 520 people, and many of them with political connections, have got into the final list,” Jayakrishnan Narikkottu, Elathur block vice president of the Congress, said. In another incident, a village officer of Kodiyathur grama panchayat was prevented by irate victims led by grama panchayat president Abdulla Chalthodika and other ward members from disbursing an immediate financial assistance of ?10,000 each to families from the beneficiary list, alleging that their names had been excluded from the list. They said initially a list had been drawn up after field verification. But their names were found missing in the final list. The issue was settled after the Tahsildar promised the protesters to look into their complaints. Similarly, victims whose houses had been submerged in Mavoor grama panchayat alleged negligence on the part of officials at the block level in including their names in the list. Meanwhile, Muslim Youth League (MYL) workers along with victims staged a protest at the venue of a programme at Thamarasery on Thursday against the alleged apathy of the government in rehabilitating families affected by the Karinchola-Kattippara landslip. This happened when officials gathered to collect relief funds. The protesters were arrested and later released after Minister for Excise and Labour T.P. Ramakrishnan left the venue. MYL leader Najeeb Kathapuram accused the government of delaying the rehabilitation package. Several flood victims had lost their families and property. However Mr. Ramakrishnan said that the protest was an attempt to sabotage the government’s relief activities.
