Kannur railway station development to gather pace

Railway officials have said that the Southern Railway will take all measures to accelerate the ongoing developmental work at the Kannur railway station amid concerns over alleged sluggish pace of the work. He also said that the new main building of the railway station would be opened by December 25 as a Christmas and New Year gift. He flagged off the Swachh Bharat Mission Fortnight here. The Railway authorities also agreed to address the poor condition of railway staff quarters, she said adding that 48 family quarters would be opened soon. The bid has been finalised and the work awarded, he said adding that the work would start after the shifting of the pipeline.

After a meeting with P.K. Sreemathy, MP, here on Saturday, Pratap Singh Shami, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Southern Railway’s Palakkad Division, said that the works of the fourth and fifth platform would begin soon after clearing technical issues linked with the shifting of the pipes of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. The bid has been finalised and the work awarded, he said adding that the work would start after the shifting of the pipeline. Mr. Shami, who was here as part of a function in connection with the Swachh Bharat Mission Fortnight, said that a couple of lifts and escalators would also be installed along with the new foot overbridge at the southern end of the platform. He also said that the new main building of the railway station would be opened by December 25 as a Christmas and New Year gift. Ms. Sreemathy said that the Railway officials promised that the subway connecting platform 1 to platforms 2 and 3 would be completed and inaugurated before November 1. The present delay was caused by some technical glitch, she said adding that it was solved. She also said that the work on toilets at platforms 2 and 3 was also progressing. The Railway authorities also agreed to address the poor condition of railway staff quarters, she said adding that 48 family quarters would be opened soon. The DRM said that though the proposal to start MEMU service in the Palakkad-Mangaluru stretch is under consideration by replacing the existing passenger train services, it would be taken up only after the new rakes are sanctioned.
