Village offices function on Sunday after yellow alert

Around 20 village offices functioned in the rural areas covering Thamarassery, Koyilandy and Vadakara taluks. In Kozhikode taluk alone, as many as 12 village offices functioned as usual on the instructions of District Collector U.V. Though gusty wind damaged some buildings in rural areas on Saturday night, no one sustained injuries. Meanwhile, visitor turnout on the Kozhikode beach was minimal on Sunday following safety alert.

In Kozhikode taluk alone, as many as 12 village offices functioned as usual on the instructions of District Collector U.V. Jose, who also heads the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). Around 20 village offices functioned in the rural areas covering Thamarassery, Koyilandy and Vadakara taluks. Revenue officials said not even a single village office remained closed in Koyilandy taluk. Fisheries Department officials said the timely alert by the IMD and the State government had helped fishermen from Kozhikode district safely return to the shores. Boat owners too could take advance safety measures and safekeep their boats at harbours, they added. Meanwhile, visitor turnout on the Kozhikode beach was minimal on Sunday following safety alert. Police personnel were deployed in some vulnerable coastal areas to prevent people from entering. Though gusty wind damaged some buildings in rural areas on Saturday night, no one sustained injuries. Revenue Department sources said some families living close to landslip-prone areas at Kattippara, Koodaranhi and Puthuppadi panchayats had been advised to remain prepared to shift to relief camps in case of an emergency. Local panchayats and rescue forces will remain alert in the area till the IMD issues further safety directives, they added. An officer attached to the Disaster Management Cell said the new rescue squads planned by the district administration to mitigate the impact of natural calamities would be deployed on Monday. A logo of the new rescue project too will be unveiled in the presence of the District Collector and District Police Chief (Kozhikode City) S. Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar at the District Planning Committee hall, he added.
