KOZHIKODE: Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Oommen Chandy held discussions with A-group leaders who have been protesting the selection of the UDF candidate for the Irikkur constituency at Kannur, on Friday. After meeting with the A-group leaders including Sony Sebastian, whom the A-group wanted to run, Chandy said that efforts were on to find a solution at the earliest.

“I talked to them and I understand their emotions completely. I would meet Kannur MP and KPCC working president K Sudhakaran at Kannur and I would be meeting with Ramesh Chennithala and Mullappally Ramachandran to talk about the issue on Saturday morning at Thiruvananthapuram,” he said. Chandy added that everyone wants a united party to face the elections and the discussion was to create an atmosphere ideal for such a contest. Chandy refused to clarify when asked whether denying the seat to Sony Sebastian was fair. “I can only listen to their issues. I will have to discuss the issue with other senior leaders to find a solution,” said Chandy.

He didn’t give a clear answer to questions on the possibility of handing over the Kannur DCC presidency to the A-group as part of solving the crisis. Ahead of the candidate declaration, an overnight protest was held at Irikkur, where it was stated that Sajeev Joseph`s candidature wasn`t acceptable. The party leadership ignored the protests, resulting in the resignation of several leaders from the party leadership including Kannur UDF chairman PT Mathew. On Wednesday, hundreds of Congress activists had attended a parallel convention at Irikkur in support of Sebastian. UDF`s KC Joseph had won the Irikkur seat in 2016 by over 9,000 votes.
