Kondotty: In a major breakthrough the police have busted a conspiracy hatched by the gold smuggling gangs to finish off the members of the police team investigating the gold heist cases reported from the Calicut International Airport. The police have registered a case in this connection on the basis of WhatsApp chats which were decoded from the mobile phones of the accused. The special investigating team had arrested 27 persons in connection with the smuggling case. The police stumbled upon the conspiracy when their phone calls were checked with the help of the cyber cell. The decoding of a phone call received by Riyas of Koduvally who was arrested on July 30 and remanded in judicial custody in connection with gold smuggling cases helped the police get a vital clue. Riyas was asked by the sender of the message to plan an attack on the members of the police probe team by using a vehicle with no documents. He said he would spend any amount of money for the purpose. Soon the police asked the custody of Riyas. While questioning Riyas the police got the details of the accused who had sent the message and his accomplices. In another related incident an SI who is a member of the police probe team had received a message threatening that his family members would be kidnapped soon. A major gold smuggling racket was busted at the Calicut airport located at Karipur while a probe was being held into a road accident on June 21. Soon it was revealed that the gangs which were out to loot gold smuggled out of the airport by carriers and those providing cover to them were speeding on the roads when one of their vehicles was rammed by a cement-laden lorry killing five gangsters. Police and Customs have registered different cases.
