Through the scheme, we wish to light up the lives of children with special needs, and make them move on,” Mr. Hakkeem said. Under the project, therapists and doctors at the CRC will offer treatment for these children at the 15 block resource centres (BRC). Over 14,000 differently-abled primary school students in the district will get therapy facilities from August 1 as the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and Composite Regional Centre (CRC) for Persons with Disabilities have launched ‘Magic Lantern’, a special scheme for the purpose. The services of experts in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy at the CRC would be made available at the BRCs. Camps will be held by the special education and clinical psychology departments of the CRC to identify those with learning disabilities.

more-in Over 14,000 differently-abled primary school students in the district will get therapy facilities from August 1 as the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and Composite Regional Centre (CRC) for Persons with Disabilities have launched ‘Magic Lantern’, a special scheme for the purpose. According to A.K. Abdul Hakkeem, district programme officer, SSA, there are many differently-abled students from the weaker sections of society in government and aided primary schools who do not have access to medical facilities at the Government Medical College or the Institute for Mental Health and Neurosciences. They might require different types of treatment and therapies. Under the project, therapists and doctors at the CRC will offer treatment for these children at the 15 block resource centres (BRC). The 165 children at the six autism centres in the district too will be covered. “Magic lantern was one of the earliest forms of image projectors. As light passed through immobile slides, viewers were exposed to a whole new visual experience. Through the scheme, we wish to light up the lives of children with special needs, and make them move on,” Mr. Hakkeem said. It is also being planned to train parents and resource teachers. The services of experts in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy at the CRC would be made available at the BRCs. Camps will be held by the special education and clinical psychology departments of the CRC to identify those with learning disabilities. Inaugurating the scheme on Saturday, M.K. Raghavan, MP, promised funds for its effective implementation.
