Out of more than 500 closed-circuit surveillance cameras, only 70 are now functional in the city to send live feeds to the control room. Also, the reluctance on the part of some residents to share live CCTC visuals with the control room played spoilsport. Efforts by the police to connect private surveillance cameras at important locations in the city with a control room have lost steam, thanks to lack of cooperation from private partners and failure of the department to sensitise them on its need. Control room officials said the proposal was made by a former district police chief (Kozhikode city). Many opposed the initiative, arguing that the police were literally struggling to manage the existing cameras and their maintenance.

more-in Efforts by the police to connect private surveillance cameras at important locations in the city with a control room have lost steam, thanks to lack of cooperation from private partners and failure of the department to sensitise them on its need. Out of more than 500 closed-circuit surveillance cameras, only 70 are now functional in the city to send live feeds to the control room. Control room officials said the proposal was made by a former district police chief (Kozhikode city). However, it was shelved soon after his transfer. “No fresh instructions have been issued to us to work on the proposal,” they added. It was in 2014 that the police department began groundwork on setting up such a wide surveillance network to enhance the security cover of the city. A Deputy Commissioner of Police too was put in charge of coordinating the project, as it was found to be a feasible solution at various district-level discussions. Though bankers and traders were initially expected to cooperate with the project in the first phase, they left it midway citing absence of follow-up discussions and coordination by the police. Also, the reluctance on the part of some residents to share live CCTC visuals with the control room played spoilsport. A few traders, who were initially willing to join the initiative, said they were compelled to leave it, as the police wanted them to bear the entire expenses. Many opposed the initiative, arguing that the police were literally struggling to manage the existing cameras and their maintenance.
