As Investors Summit opens today, UP’s industrial development minister Satish Mahana tells Neha Lalchandani about the advantages the state offers to entrepreneurs• We are not holding this summit just for MoUs. The previous government, for instance, held their summit in a hall in the Trident Hotel in Mumbai. We went to the same hotel and in the same room, with the same people, held our road show to advertise for the summit. What we are calling our road show was their summit. What the previous governments did was to hold road shows and call them summits.

As Investors Summit opens today, UP’s industrial development minister Satish Mahana tells Neha Lalchandani about the advantages the state offers to entrepreneurs• We are not holding this summit just for MoUs. What the previous governments did was to hold road shows and call them summits. The previous government, for instance, held their summit in a hall in the Trident Hotel in Mumbai. We went to the same hotel and in the same room, with the same people, held our road show to advertise for the summit. What we are calling our road show was their summit. This government has worked really hard to bring the industrialists over and will ensure that we provide them with the right environment and cooperation they need to invest in the state. I will make sure that if someone is serious about investing in UP , that person will get all the help within law to ensure that their work happens smoothly.• I believe that earlier governments were not really interested in moving things. Officials in UP also did not have the freedom to work. In Ahmedabad, officials can meet anyone, even the highest level of industry people. If an officer here does the same thing, he or she will be marked as corrupt. People will point fingers at them, accusing them of colluding with industrialists. I had to break this system and started meeting people even at home, including builders, so that I could solve their problems. The biggest problem in UP is the work culture. Officials feel that if they do something, they will be marked out but if they have done nothing wrong, why should they worry.• Several. Think about it, if other states in the country with less than 25% of UP’s population can be identified as good areas for industries, why can’t UP, with a bigger consumer market, do better than them. If Gujarat can set up industries for 6 crore people, then why can’t we. Gujarat or Chennai or Mumbai have the advantage of a port but we also have many advantages, like that of fertile land, water resources and a huge agriculture base. The state is a prime tourist destination and have the largest number of pilgrimage sites.
