After a week of unrest and disturbance caused by a clash between students and teachers at the Lucknow University, it’s back to the normal routine at the institution. The violence that followed a students’ protest last Wednesday, had led to the admission process at the university being stalled and all classes suspended. But on Tuesday, the university reopened for students and though the attendance was low, classes went on as usual on campus, but with a twist. With no electricity following an early morning thunderstorm and rain on Thursday, the professors, who wished to not waste an academic day, conducted lectures on the terrace of one of the departments. Anoop Kumar Bhartiya, a professor in the Department of Social Work, conducted classes for BA first year students on the terrace of the department. The two-hour open-air lecture was enjoyed by most students barring a few, who found the scenario bizarre. Rishabh Singh, one of the students, found it strange for a class to be conducted on the terrace.Prof Anoop Kumar Bhartiya conducted the first class of the session of the BA first year students of Social Work on the terrace on Thursday morning (BCCL/ Vishnu Jaiswal)Rishabh says, "We were not expecting this. I understand that there was no electricity but who conducts classes on the terrace? Somehow it gave me a feeling of a pathshaala where everyone sits out in the open under a tree and studies. It was my first day today at the university and I really had high hopes and this is what I got!"Sanjana, another student of the same class, also expressed similar emotions and said, "I was not ready to come to the university but then I read that the management is doing a lot for the students so that they feel safe. But then we are made to study on the terrace since there was a power cut. I thought the first day would start off with an introduction round and whatnot but yahan toh scene hi kuchh aur tha."But among those who enjoyed studying out in the open was Shikha Talwar, who said, "The weather was nice, it was cloudy and a soft breeze was blowing so it was fun studying on the terrace." Agreeing with her, Jatin Agarwal, her classmate said, "I think it was a very good idea to take the class on the terrace. It was so hot and dark in the classroom whereas it was nice on the terrace. At least sir ne class toh li, bhale hi chhat pe li ho. Students in other departments were asked by their professors to leave for the day as there was no electricity and it wasn’t very comfortable in the classroom."Giving his reason for conducting a class on the terrace, Prof Anoop Bhartiya said, "I conduct open-air classes during winters too. That’s because I feel that the students gain better knowledge in natural surroundings. Today I took a class on the terrace because there was no electricity and it was dark and humid in the classroom. Outside, in the morning, the weather was nice and cool, and I enjoyed teaching the newbies and they too enjoyed studying in the open."— Prachi Arya
