LMC teams to conduct raids seize polythene

This time, taking lessons from the past, besides penalizing those manufacturing and selling prohibited products, civic agencies will also have to provide alternative to people. This time, taking lessons from the past, besides penalizing those manufacturing and selling prohibited products, civic agencies will also have to provide alternative to people. LUCKNOW: After urging people to shun use of polythene of less than 50 micron thickness, LMC will start strict enforcement of the ban and start seizing the banned polythene from Sunday.The corporation has set up eight teams comprising officials from UP Pollution Control Board , district administration, police and commercial tax department to conduct raids across the city to recover polythene from factories, wholesalers and retailers.Municipal commissioner Indramani Tripathi said, “As per Municipal Corporation 1959 Act, we can impose a penalty of up to Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 on shopkeepers keeping the banned polythene. Anything which pollutes the environment is considered an offence under the Act and we can accordingly penalise the offender.”The district administration has also spoken to members of UP Plastic Association to handover the seized polythene for its conversion into granules for further use.The administration has made a list of 100 wholesalers, factories and retailers involved in trade of the banned polythene category.In the first phase lasting three to four days, LMC is targeting only factories and wholesalers, after which the teams will raid retailers and vendors.
