MEERUT: In a major twist in a murder case, a woman named Kavita, 32, was arrested after she evaded police lens for six years. On June 26, 2012, Kavita, wife of a local history-sheeter Dharmendra , had allegedly killed a man and disfigured his body to conceal his identity in Saharanpur's Sarsawan.“A mutilated body was recovered from a desolate spot in Sarsawan’s Sorna village in Saharanpur. The body was charred beyond any scope of identification,” said Upendra Agarwal, Saharanpur senior superintendent of police.Kavita later raised the alarm about the murder and identified the deceased as Dharmendra in a plan to fool police, because her husband was named in close to a dozen cases of murder and robbery.“At that time (in 2012), raids were being conducted to nab Dharmendra who is a hardened criminal. The family then decided to hatch a conspiracy to mislead the police once and for all,” a police officer at Sarsawan police station said. After the murder, the couple fled to Haryana to start life all over again. During the autopsy it was revealed that the murdered man was not Dharmendra, as claimed by Kavita. “Police discovered the plot after realizing the dead man was circumcised,” Agarwal said.Meanwhile, Kavita and Dharmendra started working at a brick kiln as daily wage labourers. The couple’s luck finally ran out recently when local police were tipped off about their presence in the region. “We got information that the couple was visiting relatives during off-season at the brick kiln. Dharmendra was arrested after an encounter earlier this week followed by Kavita’s arrest on Thursday,” Mubarik Hasan, surveillance in-charge said.
