Lucknow Stores buyers fail to shun poly bags

I am compelled to use banned ones,” said Mohammad Samir, a medicine shop owner in Hazratganj.Shopkeepers at Victoria Street, Nadan Mahal road, Rakabganj, Akbari Gate, Gol Darwaza, Mandi crossing and adjoining areas in Old City were also found using banned poly bags.“The thicker poly bags are costly. We cannot give them for free to customers and if we charge for them then customers feel offended,” said Shubham Arora, owner of a garments shop.“I came to buy mutton but cloth bags are not suited for carrying it.

LUCKNOW: Despite district administration’s two-day drive to urge people to shun use of plastic, many were spotted using thin poly bags and thermocol disposable utensils even though the ban came into effect on Sunday with the state government passing an ordinance.Shopkeepers and customers said that they were forced to use polythene as there is no alternate, while some said that polythene bags were more suited for carrying certain items.When TOI went out for a reality check, it found that polythene was being used without any hesitation.Shopkeepers and vendors under Nishatganj flyover were handing over fruits, vegetables to customers in thin poly bags.“These polythene bags are cheaper than the thicker ones. I will have to increase cost of my goods if I go for thicker bags as they cost more. I can’t refuse customers if they don’t bring their own cloth bags. The government must provide an alternate to us first,” said a shopkeeper.Even shopkeepers in Hazratganj and Lalbagh were seen handing polythene bags.When questioned they said that it will take some time for them as most people are not aware and mindful of the ban and don’t bring their own bags.“There is no cheap alternate. I went to buy thicker poly bags, but they were not available. The meatseller charged Rs 5 extra for thick poly bag,” said Imran, a resident of Nishatganj.A number of shops had, however, started using paper and cloth bags soon after the ban was announced and had started telling their customers about it.
