After MA, Atal Bihari Vajpayee joined LLB at Kanpur's DAV college. And he had a new classmate — his father Krishna Bihari Vajpayee, a retired teacher then. This made him uncomfortable and the two decided not to attend classes together. So, it was Atal’s turn to attend classes on Monday and his father’s on Tuesday and so on.“The two used to live together in room number 104 of DAV hostel. After classes, he often used to visit his house to discuss various issues, he says.

Atalji found it embarrassing to study in the same classroom with his father. Their admission was a topic of gossip among college students and teachers,” says Manavendra Swarup, president, board of management, DAV college.Associate professor Vijay Pratap Singh says that the then head of political science department Madan Mohan Pandey was very close to Vajpayee. He used to call him “guruji”. After classes, he often used to visit his house to discuss various issues, he says.
