LUCKNOW: A portion of a two-storey building on Ashok Marg collapsed on Monday evening. Though no one was injured, seven two-wheelers parked outside the 70-year-old building, known as Narang Building, were damaged as the rubble fell on them.There are 14 shops in Narang Building while four tenant also reside on its upper floors. The incident led to traffic disruption on the busy Ashok Marg for sometime.Interestingly, no official from the Lucknow development authority (LDA), Nagar Nigam or the administration reached the spot after the incident.Around 7.35pm, the attic of the building caved in and the rubble started falling on the bikes parked outside. The incident triggered panic among commuters, shopkeepers and the residents of the building. Some commuters informed the police. The police have cordoned off the area around the building.SSP Kalanidhi Naithani said the building constructed in 1948 was in a dilapidated state. “The building owner had rented out the shops and flats. The attic of the roof on the second floor was in a bad condition for a long time,” he said. A week ago, the municipal corporation had issued a notice to the building owner asking him to get the repair work done.Pappu Yadav, who runs a paan kiosk next to the building, said, “I felt it was an earthquake as a brick fell on my kiosk. I immediately ran away from the building.”Rajiv Bohra, one of the tenants of the building, said told TOI: “I asked all tenants to quickly reach to the ground floor. It was very scary.”The tenants of the building have formed Narang Welfare Association. Its president Atul Sethi, who also owns a shop on the ground floor of the building, told TOI that they had started getting the building repaired after notice was issued by the municipal corporation.Meanwhile, Vikram Narang, son of building owner, told TOI that they had sent a notice to all the departments concerned about the structural lapses in the building and also apprised them about its precarious state. “The building is not fit to reside in but the tenants are not ready to vacate it despite several notices,” he said.
