LUCKNOW: For the fourth year in a row, Shia and Sunni Muslims in Lucknow will stand beside each other, shoulder to shoulder , to offer joint Namaz on Eid-ul-Azha Bakrid ) that will be celebrated on Wednesday, at the sprawling lawns of the historic Shahnajaf Imambara in the morning. While keeping with its tradition of the joint namaz followed by an all community Eid Milan at the venue, a simple gesture as an expression of solidarity and an assertion in favour of peace, this time the joint namaz will also lay foundation to two special initiatives. As a first, arrangements have been made for women from both the communty to also offer the namaz at the venue, which is an unprecedented gesture in itself. To help the flood struck state of Kerala, funds will also be raised with a number of socially working organisations coming together at the venue to help collect donations that will then be directed to the Chief Minister's Disaster Relief Fund.Another special feature of the all community Eid Milan is its management by young volunteers who belong to all religions, faiths and ideologies, serving guests with relishing Sewaiyan at the venue.Being held as a tradition that people from Lucknow and those from other cities wait for all round the year, the initiative came together in 2015 through a citizen driven platform-Shoulder to Shoulder (S2S) Foundation that works for peace and communal amity. As a prelude to the namaz that will be offered in a Shia Imambara and the congregation be led by a Sunni Imam, a number of video invites were sent out by who's who of the city asking people to take part and come forth to celebrate the festival in unison. In one such video invite, Imam of the Gomtinagar Eidgah, Maulana Hafiz Saeed said, "While I am the Imam of an Eidgah and have to lead the prayers at the mosque, my heart eagerly wishes to be present at the joint namaz and offer prayers together with my Shia brethren. This sends out a big message and from our city which holds a bigger value."Noted Urdu poet Abhishek Shukla in another video asked people to join for both the namaz and the all community Eid Milan to follow it with Sewaiyan. He said, "For any evolved society it is imperative that one lives in love and unison with its neighbour. Embrace one another and celebrate each other's festival."While patron of the initiative, Maulana Kalbe Sadiq, will be unable to attend the namaz due to ill health, representatives from other communities including Dr Gurmeet Singh of the Yahiyganj Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, Father Donald D'Souza spokesperson of the Catholic Diocese of Lucknow and Mahant Divyagiri, priestess of the Mankameshwar Mandir will be present for the event like previous years. The event will be strung together by the thoughts and words of Ali Khan Mahmudabad.
