‘In Lucknow University mess, food comes with special insect seasoning’

They said that Lucknow University authorities are not paying attention to repeated complaints about poor hygiene and food quality. “Just take a round of central mess and you will get an idea of the kind of hygiene that is maintained here. Earlier, cockroaches and flies were found in food served at central mess.The students alleged that poor hygiene in and around the mess is the cause of insects being found in food served to them. Along with hostel warden, I will personally inspect the food being served.” There is no pest control and as a result insects, flies and mosquitoes are in abundance and land up in our food.

LUCKNOW: Insects being found in meals at the mess in Lucknow University seems to have become a regular routine, with a worm being found in lunch in central mess on Sunday — the fourth such incident in the last 25 days.A similar complaint had been received a week ago from the Tilak Girls’ hostel where inmates had found insect in the dinner. Earlier, cockroaches and flies were found in food served at central mess.The students alleged that poor hygiene in and around the mess is the cause of insects being found in food served to them. They said that Lucknow University authorities are not paying attention to repeated complaints about poor hygiene and food quality. “Just take a round of central mess and you will get an idea of the kind of hygiene that is maintained here. There is no pest control and as a result insects, flies and mosquitoes are in abundance and land up in our food. The hot and humid weather has led to an increase in worms who find way in our meals,” said a hostel inmate Suraj Singh.“The worst thing is that when we show mess employees insects crawling around, they pick and throw them aside,” said Madhurya Singh. “It now seems to us that over here every recipe comes with special insect seasoning, tea is served with icing of ants, lentils with cockroaches and rice with small beetles,” said hostel inmate Anurag.On being questioned, LU vice-chancellor S P Singh said that he will hold a meeting with mess staff to solve the problem.When probed why no action was taken on regular complaints of unhygienic and poor quality food, Singh said, “I will appoint in charges who will inspect food before its served to students. Along with hostel warden, I will personally inspect the food being served.”
