UP cabinet nod to 12 hike in MSP for paddy farmers

LUCKNOW: In yet another farmer outreach ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the state cabinet on Tuesday gave nod to the new paddy purchase policy. The projects, Sharma said, will be identified by a committee comprising divisional commissioners and district magistrates concerned. Sharma said the MSP will be transferred to the accounts of farmers through RTGS within 72 hours to ensure transparency. Representatives of the local bodies may also recommend the projects to the state government. It would give over 12% rise in the minimum support price ( MSP ) for paddy farmers in the state.State government spokesperson and cabinet minister Srikant Sharma said that MSP for grades A and B varieties of paddy has been raised from Rs 1,550 to Rs 1,750 per quintal and from Rs 1,590 to Rs 1,770 per quintal, respectively.

It would give over 12% rise in the minimum support price ( MSP ) for paddy farmers in the state.State government spokesperson and cabinet minister Srikant Sharma said that MSP for grades A and B varieties of paddy has been raised from Rs 1,550 to Rs 1,750 per quintal and from Rs 1,590 to Rs 1,770 per quintal, respectively. Besides a higher MSP, the state cabinet also gave its approval to transportation cost at the payment of Rs 20 per quintal to the farmers.The state government also increased the target of procuring paddy to 50 lakh metric tonnes from last year's 43 lakh metric tonnes. The procurement will start from October 1 and continue till February 28. Sharma said the MSP will be transferred to the accounts of farmers through RTGS within 72 hours to ensure transparency. The payment will not be made through cheques.The development comes close on the heels of the state government making a budgetary provision to felicitate payment of cane arrears which have risen to over Rs 9,000 crore.Sharma said the cabinet also approved a funding scheme with a corpus of Rs 1,850 crore to give a financial boost to infrastructural projects to put the state on a higher growth trajectory. The projects which are proposed to be benefited with this include construction of educational institutes, including ITIs, hospitals and projects pertaining to drinking water supply and irrigation Projects like road construction and widening, street lighting and afforestation are also proposed to be taken up under the scheme. The projects, Sharma said, will be identified by a committee comprising divisional commissioners and district magistrates concerned. Representatives of the local bodies may also recommend the projects to the state government.
