There is a police outpost on the crossing with several policemen but rules are being violated with impunity.Vehicles coming from Vibhuti Khand do not care about traffic regulations and drive on the wrong side, endangering motorists coming from Polytechnic Crossing, near Eastend (Wave) Mall.Besides, the only cut on the stretch after Lohia Crossing is at Polytechnic Crossing. For example, vehicles coming from Vibhuti Khand and Polytechnic Crossing make U-turn near Wave Mall just to avoid the long stretch which continues till Lohia Crossing.Rules are disregarded mostly to save time and fuel, commuters say. As a result, drivers ply on the wrong side to reach nearby destinations. The distance between the two points is more than 3km. At the second instance, the period of imprisonment is increased to two years or fine amount to Rs 2,000.In addition, instead of going around the island to turn for their destination, commuters are seen taking wrong U-turns at the crossing for connecting roads.

Lawless and permanently crowded Polytechnic Crossing is being re-engineered for smooth flow of traffic, but a reality check by TOI found that the plan will not lead to desired results if traffic police fail to strictly implement rules.Apart from faulty engineering of the road, three major factors responsible for traffic congestion in the area all day long are: haphazard parking of tempos and auto-rickshaws, vehicles plying on the wrong side and vehicles taking wrong U-turns. Hardly any traffic policeman is seen disciplining commuters there.Commuters, meanwhile, feel that there is a need for a cut in the divider on the stretch.“There is a need for a cut in the divider near Wave Mall to allow passage for Lohia Path and Vibhuti Khand traffic,” said Ankit Shukla, a businessman.“The road has become dangerous due to those driving on the wrong side,” he added.Under section 184 of the Motor Vehicle Act, driving on the wrong side of the road invites a six-month prison term or fine of Rs 1,000 for the first offence.
