They urged the officials to change the event to some other day like October 2 or January 26 and not link it to a religious occasion.“This is a social cause and it should not be connected with religion. The decision of performing puja on the first day of Navratri hurts the sentiments of Hindus,” said Hari Shankar Sharma, city president of the Mahasabha.Talking to the media, organisation’s spokesperson Ashok Kumar Pandey said that they are opposing the initiative because of its “anti-Hindu sentiments”. He said, “If they really want to do such things then they should approach other community members and use their festivals.” He demanded that the event be cancelled and the district administration apologise for it.“We will approach the chief minister as the matter is related to Navratri, which is a festival of Goddess Durga, and such type of events on this day is not acceptable to us,” Pandey added.However, chief development officer Dinesh Chandra did not agree with the view of members of Hindu Mahasabha. “The CM and PM have given recognition to toilets as ‘izzatghar’. Aligarh district magistrate CB Singh said, “It is all about changing the mindset of the people about toilets, which have been identified as important places and everyone should treat them with respect.”Nodal officers have been appointed by the administration to visit over 1,000 villages in 902 gram panchayats. They will also give away rewards of Rs 101 to the best beneficiary for their attempts in making toilets in their respective villages, said an official.
