(Image used for representational purpose) A 65-year old man and a 55-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison after their families and locals raised objection to their relationship in Jalaun district Sunday, police said. While the woman was declared brought dead, the man died late Sunday night during treatment in the district hospital. Nathhu Kushwaha is survived by his wife and three sons, while Tara Devi was a widow. She used to live with her two sons, police said. “The incident took place at Jolhupur village in Kalpi police station area. The two were in a relationship for the last two years. Nathhu and Tara were neighbours. Tara’s husband died around two months ago. The villagers told us that at least two to three panchayats were held in the village where the two elderly people were asked to end their relationship. They were regularly humiliated by their families and locals over their relationship,” said Sudhakar Mishra, SHO of Kalpi police station. Recently, Nathhu’s son found him at Tara’s house and the matter was again taken up at the village panchayat, Kalpi circle officer (CO) Subodh Kumar Gautam said. The humiliation by the locals and the family members probably led the two to take the step, he added. “On Sunday around 2.30 pm, Tara’s neighbour spotted her lying unconscious in the verandah of her house, while Nathhu was trying to hang himself from the ceiling in the same place. Nathhu, too, had consumed poison. The neighbour informed others who rushed them to the hospital where the woman was declared brought dead. Police recovered empty pouches of sulphas tablets and an empty bottle of alcohol. No suicide note was recovered from the spot. Doctors confirmed that both consumed the tablets,” CO added. Village head, Chhote Lal, said, “The two were in a relationship for over two years. They were time and again asked to end their relationship, but they did not listen to us.” For all the latest Lucknow News, download Indian Express App
