By: Falah JalaliLUCKNOW: Short films shot by girls from the rural regions by using smartphones were the toast at Film Festival — Smart Betiyaan at Lucknow Literature Festival on Friday.Four short films made by girls from villages in Uttar Pradesh , showcasing the problems faced by girls in rural areas, were the highlight of the event.Rekha, Rashmi, Gunjan and Sadhna had made short films based on their struggles in the village with the help of their friends. Using mobile phones, these girls had told the truth of their everyday rural problems through short films. Rekha resisted her family’s attempts to marry her off at the age of 18 years as she fought for her right to study. Fighting financial problems, Rekha learnt to use the internet through ‘internet Saathi’ initiative under which she has been teaching other village children how to use internet.She studied computers and made a short film to inspire other girls in her village to do the same.“A girl from the city will never understand the struggles of a girl from a village. Rashmi’s movie focused not just on girls but also on fathers who supported their daughter’s education.Gunjan and her friends had pooled their pocket money to pay fees of their schoolmate Brijrani for three years. They made a short film to put emphasis on the importance of female education.Another film was by 13 year old Sadhna and her friend Rita who rallied their village Bandani to build public toilets accessible to everyone as well as toilets in homes.The film was inspired from their lives when open defecation was the only way for the girls of the village to relieve themselves, which would be obstructed if young girls overslept and the men were already out in the fields.These girls made short films on their smart phones.Smart Betiyaan is an initiative by Unicef and Foundation for Rural Entrepreneurship Development (FREND) which has been implemented by Phia Foundation in UP.In the initiative, these girls were taught how to make short films using smartphones so that they gain courage to tell stories that affect them everyday. The aim is to bring about a change by showcasing inspiring stories.
