Nod likely for land deal for defence corridor

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government will push work on the proposed Rs 20,000-crore defence corridor with decisions on purchase of land at three nodes out of seven and the formation of a high-powered committee likely to be taken at the cabinet meeting on Tuesday.The decisions are to be taken on Tuesday as state chief secretary Anup Chandra Pandey will meet Union defence ministry officials in Delhi on November 22. The state government may also get cabinet approval for formation of a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for the project.The cabinet is also likely to approve the recommendation for selecting two innovation centres at IIT Kanpur and BHU Varanasi as centres of excellence and sanction of funds of nearly Rs 350 crore each.The defence corridor has seven land nodes at Kanpur, Jalaun Chitrakoot, Jhansi, Agra, Aligrah and Lucknow through which the corridor pass. The UP government, through UPEIDA - which is the nodal agency of the project - will purchase land at the six nodes - Jhansi (3000 hectares), Chitrakoot (5000 hectares) and Jalaun (200 hectares).The state government intends of purchase nearly 5000 hectares of land at the cost of Rs 3000 crore for the project in phases.The first phase would start with Tuesday's cabinet decision So far, Bharat Electrical and the Uttarakhand-based Nanda Explosives have expressed their intent to purchase land for their ventures in the defence corridor. The ministry will review the project and is likely to give clearances to take it forward.Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to lay the foundation stone of the project in January next year, just ahead of the general elections.A senior IAS officer of the state industries department, who has returned after attending the defence expo in Kanpur, told TOI that the cabinet is likely to approve the plan for purchase of land for the corridor in Jhansi, Chitrakoot and Jalaun in Bundelkhand , out of the seven nodes that have been finalised.The cabinet is also likely to approve the formation of a high-powered committee under the chairmanship of chief secretary with defence experts from the government as well as private sector as its members.This panel will discuss day-to-day decisions and finalise plans for seamless implementation of the project.
