WhatsApp message helped cops nab main accused

LUCKNOW: It was a message on WhatsApp that helped police arrest the prime accused in the murder of a hotel receptionist in Vibhuti Khand on Saturday. The towel had initials of the hotel he was staying with another female friend Ruby.Narang's mobile phone had a WhatsApp group "friends with benefits" used by all the accused for communication with each other. With the help of these photos, police identified Ritu when she landed at Lucknow airport. The number was registered in name of Ritu Pandey (name changed), who was Abhay's friend. The group chat revealed that Narang had first gone to meet Gurmeet around 10.40pm but was not allowed by Singh, following which he was 'teased' by Gurmeet and Ruby.

Abhay Singh was the last among the five accused, including two women, to be arrested late on Saturday night.All the accused - Dheeraj Narang, Ruby, Gurmeet, Abhay and Hari Om - are outsiders and had come to Lucknow for a gettogether but were staying at different hotels.Police said Krishnakant Pratap Singh (22), receptionist at a hotel in Gomtinagar, was shot dead by Abhay when he stopped Abhay and his friends Dheeraj and Hari Om from meeting their online friend Gurmeet who was staying at the hotel. The murder was caught on the hotel's CCTV camera.Narang was the first to be arrested after he was tracked by the police through a towel he used to conceal his face at the time of crime. Narang had dropped the towel while fleeing. The towel had initials of the hotel he was staying with another female friend Ruby.Narang's mobile phone had a WhatsApp group "friends with benefits" used by all the accused for communication with each other. The group chat revealed that Narang had first gone to meet Gurmeet around 10.40pm but was not allowed by Singh, following which he was 'teased' by Gurmeet and Ruby. Narang felt humiliated and came back after three hours with Abhay and Hari to teach Singh a lesson.While Narang, Gurmeet and Ruby were arrested soon after the murder, the numbers of Abhay and Hari in the WhatsApp group were found to be untraceable.The group also had a message from an unknown number which read: "don't worry landing from Bangalore by 7.55am". The number was registered in name of Ritu Pandey (name changed), who was Abhay's friend. Abhay had posted his photographs with Ritu on his Facebook page. With the help of these photos, police identified Ritu when she landed at Lucknow airport. During interrogation, Ritu gave another mobile number of Abhay which was tracked was found active near Chinhat.A police team nabbed Abhay while he was fleeing to Barabanki along with Hari and another aide Radhey.
