For another one month, 75 years old Leelawati, who could barely walk or speak, survived on whatever little his son Salil Chaudhary had left for her. SHAHJAHANPUR: Like always, he left some eatables for the ailing mother, before leaving the house in railway colony and latching its door from outside. The mother, who always believed in her son, this time too thought that he would return. We learnt from the neighbours that Salil started consuming alcohol soon after his wife ditched him. We are now waiting for the post-mortem examination report to find the exact cause of the death.

SHAHJAHANPUR: Like always, he left some eatables for the ailing mother, before leaving the house in railway colony and latching its door from outside. The mother, who always believed in her son, this time too thought that he would return. For another one month, 75 years old Leelawati, who could barely walk or speak, survived on whatever little his son Salil Chaudhary had left for her. But the door never opened for her. Leelawati’s body was found about a week after she died at the government house in Shahjahanpur’s railway colony. Her neighbours, after bearing the stench for over two days, called police on Sunday morning. The door was finally opened and the elderly women’s decomposed body was found lying on the bed.Jasveer Singh, SHO of Sadar Bazar police station, said: “The body had started decomposing. We are now waiting for the post-mortem examination report to find the exact cause of the death. We learnt from the neighbours that Salil started consuming alcohol soon after his wife ditched him. He was disturbed and used to leave his mother like this for days. There was nothing to eat inside the house. She may have died due to illness or starvation as the house was locked from outside.”“If the death is due to starvation then we will file a complaint against her son for negligence,” said the SHO, adding: “Her son is not picking up the phone. We are continuously trying to contact him.”Salil, a railway ticket collector, was missing from work for the last two months, he said.Station superintendent of police (SSP) Shahjahanpur Om Shiv Awasthi told TOI: “Salil had forwarded a message on WhatsApp group about the death of his mother but he didn’t pick the phone. Leelawati was the wife of former MLC Ram Kher Singh. The family was once wealthy and renowned in Lucknow."
