SHAHJAHANPUR: It was a routine for him to leave food for his ailing and immobile mother and latch his railway colony house door from outside whenever Salil Chaudhary, a railway ticket collector, would leave the house for field duty. Last time, however, it was chillingly different. While 75-year-old Leelawati kept waiting, Salil didn't come back for a month. On Sunday, Leelawati's decomposed body was found in her son's house. The autopsy report found there was no food inside her stomach. She was also suffering from lung disease. The report said the body was around two days old. She was the widow of a former Congress councillor in Lucknow. Her body was found when neighbours, after bearing the stench for over two days, called police on Sunday.Salil is yet to claim her body despite being aware of the development as is evident from his text messages to neighbours. Although neighbours are ready to cremate Leelawati, that can happen only after no kin claims it within 72 hours.Jasveer Singh, SHO of Sadar Bazar police station, said: "We learnt that Salil started consuming alcohol after his wife ditched him. He was disturbed and used to leave his mother like this for days without anything to eat. She died due to starvation." Salil has been missing from work for the past two months, he said. Her son is yet to approach the police to claim her body despite being aware of the development
