LUCKNOW: Hazratganj is set to get a makeover and regain its former glory and the onus for it this time is on Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC). The corporation has taken up the initiative to revamp and restore the heart of the city after months of it looking like a messy construction site. With just a few months left for the Metro to run on the stretch, people are eagerly looking forward to the makeover.Around two years ago, when LMRC had begun the underground Metro project in Hazratganj, shopkeepers and citizens alike were worried if ‘Ganj’s’ beauty would be restored ever. However, with the rapid work by LMRC, Hazratganj is set to look better than before.Work has already begun on reinstating fountains, roads and footpaths. Amit Tandon, whose shop is behind the station entry gate, said, “I never thought that our city will have Metro train. Shopkeepers were initially apprehensive of construction of entry-exit, but with work nearing completion, we are hopeful of a better Hazratganj.”Another trader, Mohit Chaudhary, said, “An area so important in terms of heritage will now pride itself with a new look and Metro. The restoration of Hazratganj is important to give generations a glimpse of the past.” Saksham Sharma, a youngster, said, “We have heard of ‘Ganjing’ tradition and look forward to doing the same.”“The area is Lucknow’s pride. They are doing a good job. Ganj will look lively again,” said Sanjay Arora, a commuter. In its new look, the 100-year-old market will not only boast of a Metro train zipping through it but also retain its old charm with use of red bricks for the footpath.Because the station is in the middle of market, obstruction to shops was a concern. However, LMRC took care of that by using crystal clear glass for entry and exit corridors between Janpath and DRM office to ensure visibility of shops. All cables will go underground to ensure the market looks neat and organised.“When the project began, we took up the responsibility of the worn-out Hazratganj market. The restoration will complete by January 30 when Lucknowites will get to see a new look of the oved market,” said an official of LMRC.
