LUCKNOW: A day after a former student leader and his aides thrashed a BA second-year student with the butt of a gun and bricks near Chhatrapati Shivaji sports ground in Lucknow University premises and also allegedly opened fire, the proctorial board on Wednesday announced several measures to maintain law and order on the campus. However, TOI investigations revealed that the recommendations made by the coordination committee in August last year to improve law and order have not been implemented yet despite two incidents of firing in LU in past one month. The committee comprising LU officials, district administration and police was formed on the directions of the high court. On Wednesday, the proctor’s team held a meeting and decided that security guards, police and proctor board members will check identity cards of students. It was also decided that the proctor board members will be responsible for discipline in their respective departments. LU also requested local intelligence agencies to share information which could help it in maintaining law and order. A helpline number for students was also rolled out. Significantly, similar announcements were made by the coordination committee after a group had assaulted 12 professors last year. It had recommended regular patrolling, limiting entry and exit points, checking of IDs, fixing a spot for student protests and proper lighting in campus. The only recommendation implemented was reduction of access points as gate number 2 and 5 were locked, but it could not stop entry of outsiders.LU registrar S K Shukla said, “Since campus is huge, implementing recommendations in totality is a big challenge. We will meet on Thursday to discuss ways to control entry of outsiders, who are main source of trouble.”
