LUCKNOW: In a last-ditch attempt to make it into the top 10 cities in the Swachha Survey being conducted by the Union ministry of urban development, Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) will be spending over Rs 5 crore in the next one fortnight.LMC has hired a private company for mechanized sweeping of major roads measuring 52 km till January 31, the period during which a central team is expected to visit the city for on the spot verification of the work done by LMC. The machines mounted on two trucks will clean roads every alternate day.“The machines have started working. We will be paying Rs 75 lakh for a day’s work,” said chief engineer, rubbish removal department, Ram Nagina Tripathi. The machines are of international standards and Lucknow is the first city in UP to use them, he added.“Besides water sprinklers, the machines have circular spinning bristles for sweeping and vacuum cleaner which can suck dust particles, including micro PM 2.5 and PM 10, which will reduce pollution. The vacuum cleaner can also remove sold waste, including dead animals,” he said. One machine will sweep five routes totalling 23 km, while the other one will clean 15 routes measuring 29 km.Municipal commissioner Indramani Tripathi said, “We will pay for the services of the two machines from our smart city funds. We are planning to buy two such machines under the smart city project and increase mechanised sweeping to 80 km in city.”
