Cops may drop sedition case against AMU students

AGRA: The Aligarh police are likely to drop the “sedition” charges against 14 students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on “technical grounds”, even as they identified 17 students who were allegedly involved in fracas and vandalising vehicles inside the campus on February 12.Confirming the move, SSP Aligarh Akash Kulhari said that no evidence has been found relating to the sedition charges. He demanded that police cases filed against students should be withdrawn and outsiders who had created ruckus on February 12 should be booked. He said, action will be taken accordingly.Meanwhile, a delegation of Samajwadi Party leaders including former cabinet minister Kamal Akhtar reached AMU to meet the students sitting on dharna. The committee members will go through the documents provided by the police before submitting its final report.

After seeing the videos and three-hour-long CCTV footage, he said he had sent a letter, along with photographs of the students, to the proctorial board for taking action against them.He told TOI that summons are being issued to the proctor office, students’ union and the security guard for recording their statements relating to the violence on the fateful day. However, a team of women police will be sent to record the statement of the news channel correspondent who had alleged that the AMU security officer and students had "misbehaved" with her and her colleagues and snatched their camera.Spokesperson of the university Shafey Kidwai said that the university had already constituted a three-member fact finding committee to probe the matter. The committee members will go through the documents provided by the police before submitting its final report. He said, action will be taken accordingly.Meanwhile, a delegation of Samajwadi Party leaders including former cabinet minister Kamal Akhtar reached AMU to meet the students sitting on dharna. Akhtar said that BJP is trying to vitiate the atmosphere of all the educational institutes including Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and Allahabad University (AU) etc by forcefully imposing their ideology.“All Muslims institutes are being targeted ahead of 2019 elections,” he said, adding that their party’s view is that the educational institutes are for academic purposes, not for politics. He demanded that police cases filed against students should be withdrawn and outsiders who had created ruckus on February 12 should be booked. He said, he will submit his report to his party chief Akhilesh Yadav after talking to the students.
