LUCKNOW: Texting while on move proved perilous for 24-year old MA student, Sumit Singh, who fell into an under-construction lift duct of a four-storey apartment in Aliganj on late Saturday night as his eyes were fixed on his smartphone . “We tied up few bedsheets and used it to descend in the duct to bring out Sumit. But, after going inside the duct, I couldn’t bring him up,” he added.Navin’s brother Amit and other friends rushed to the ground floor and found carpenters having dinner there.

Singh, a resident of Aliganj, is a native of Gonda.Police said that Singh had gone to his friend’s place who lives on the second floor of the four-storey apartment. He kept climbing stairs while chatting and on reaching the fourth floor stumbled against the half-erected wall. His phone slipped out of his hand and as he reached out to grab it, he lost his balance and fell into the duct. Singh’s friend Navin (21) who was on second floor rushed to the fourth floor with other friends on hearing his screams. “We tied up few bedsheets and used it to descend in the duct to bring out Sumit. But, after going inside the duct, I couldn’t bring him up,” he added.Navin’s brother Amit and other friends rushed to the ground floor and found carpenters having dinner there. In the meantime, police also arrived.Jitendra Kumar, a carpenter, saidm “We had a drilling machine which we used to drill a hole big enough to pull them out.” “Sumit was injured. He was rushed to KGMU Trauma Centre,” said SHO Aliganj Farid Ahmed.
