LUCKNOW: IAS officer Anurag Tiwari of 2007 batch collapsed on the road possibly due to weakness caused by acute diarrhoea. The 36-year-old bureaucrat fell on his face and suffered injuries in his mouth, nostrils and chin, leaving him stifled, say doctors of All India Institute of Medical Sciences ( AIIMS ), who were consulted by CBI to examine sequence of events that could have led to his death.The observation of doctors, which are part of the 22-page closure report exclusively accessed by TOI, states Anurag was suffering from “acute gastroenteritis” on the day of incident, as was mentioned in the inquest report prepared by police. This was also confirmed by Mohammed Irfan, a friend of Anurag, who met him a day before the incident. This was corroborated by packets of electrolytes found on the table of the room occupied by him. Doctors in their written observation stated it’s medically proven that acute diarrhoea can produce sudden hypovolemic syncopal attack and incapacitating weakness due to electrolyte imbalance, resulting in sudden accidental fall and loss of consciousness.“The fall on chin/face on a hard surface resulted in split laceration below his chin, leading to bleeding. It’s likely the deceased could not get up from the prone position due to syncopal attack and his incapacitating weakness produced by diarrhoea and fall,” the doctor’s note reads. The note was prepared by a team of seven doctors of AIIMS after examining the autopsy report and reports of chemical examination of viscera and blood samples of Anurag. As the deceased fell in prone position and became unconscious with mouth and nose pressed on the surface, it’s likely it caused positional accidental smothering producing asphyxia leading to death. Such a situation is commonly seen in incapacitated or intoxicated person, the note states.Observations of AIIMS panel formed an important part of the closure report that CBI filed in court on February 20, stating no further investigation was required in the case. Anurag Tewari was found dead under mysterious circumstances outside the state guest house on Meerabai Marg in Hazratganj on May 17, 2017.
