Akhilesh drove down to Mayawati’s residence here on Wednesday evening after concluding his meetings with SP leaders at the party headquarters. The meeting took place soon after Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad in Meerut on Wednesday. Not only did the two regional satraps meet to finalise the dates for a joint campaign, they also discussed names of their party candidates in order to adjust local caste and social equations to counter any move by BJP to get advantage by triggering any caste or communal polarisation against the alliance. The two leaders are learnt to have discussed the manner in which the Congress has been welcoming rebels and deserters from SP and BSP and fielding them as candidates. Another important point that the two discussion was the Congress’ proximity to smaller political outfits, which it may be using to stitch a broad caste-based alliance and its impact in their constituencies. The two leaders also discussed the Priyanka’s sudden visit to Meerut to meet Chandrashekhar. Mayawati is learnt to have expressed concern over Congress’s proximity to Bhim Army chief as she sees this fledgling Dalit outfit as her rival. Both the leaders have also finalised their joint campaign in all the seven phases of voting and would be covering all the key constituencies. The two leaders may, following the joint campaign, fan out separately to pitch for their own party candidates.
